Happy Xmas, War is Over If You Want It

Happy Xmas (War Is Over) adalah catatan khusus dari seorang John Lennon yang merasa jengah dengan lagu Natal yang ‘itu-itu’ saja. John menyebutnya sebagai ‘the sick of white christmas.’ Kebetulan pada akhir ‘60 hingga ‘70an awal, bersama Yoko Ono, ia giat menggemakan isu perdamaian. "War is over! (If you want it)." Begitu katanya.

John dan Yoko menulis Happy Xmas di kamar New York City Hotel dan merekamnya pada 28 Oktober malam hingga 29 pagi, di Record Plant di New York. Tahun 1971. Mereka berkolaborasi dengan Phil Spector yang telah bekerja sama dengan John sejak bersama The Beatles. Ada suara anak-anak dari Harlem Community Choir, yang dikutsertakan dalam lagu ini. Lagu ini dirilis di Amerika Serikat sebagai lagu Natal, sayangnya tak sukses di tangga lagu. Barulah saat tahun berikutnya dirilis di Inggris, berhasil masuk hingga peringkat ke-4. Saat itu, akhirnya berhasil juga disukai publik Amerika.

Pada lirik tersebutkan nama ‘Kyoko’ yang sempat memunculkan pertanyaan bagi yang tak tahu. Kyoko, atau lengkapnya Kyoko Chan Cox adalah anak Yoko bersama Anthony Cox.

John Lennon ditembak mati pada 3 minggu sebelum Natal. Lagu ini pun dirilis ulang pada 20 Desember 1980 dan berhasil mencapai posisi runner up pada tangga lagu. Lagu ini bahkan terus menerus selama beberapa tahun masuk chart pada setiap jelang perayaan Natal.
