November Rain, Senandung Murung Bulan Berhujan

November Rain. Ini tentang cinta yang tak terbalas. Itu yang disampaikan sang penulis yang sekaligus vokalis Guns N' Roses, Axl Rose. "And it's hard to hold a candle, In the cold november rain" sebagai sulitnya menggenggam cinta bila yang dicintai tak membalasnya.

Konon butuh waktu sepuluh tahun buat Axl Rose mengulik lagu ini. Hingga akhirnya November Rain lahir dan direkam bersama lagu lainnya dalam album 'Use Your Illusion I' tahun 1991. Menurut Axl, ia ingin membuat lagu yang bisa menyejajari Stairway to Heaven atau Bohemian Rhapsody yang 'sakral' itu. Seperti sudah diketahui publik, Axl adalah penggemar Queen dan Led Zeppelin. Axl terobsesi untuk menjadikan lagunya ini khidmat dinikmati orang, seperti ketika orang menyimak dua lagu dari dua grup legenda tersebut. Awalnya Axl menulis lagu ini dalam durasi 25 menit lalu mengeditnya hingga tinggal 8:59. Lagu ini pun lantas menjadi lagu terpanjang yang pernah nangkring di Top 10 hit dan juga gitar solo terlama yang tercatat dalam Top 10 single.

Selain lagunya, yang tak kalah menarik adalah klipnya. Video November Rain menghabiskan biaya lebih dari  $1.5 juta. Tak rugi ketika akhirnya ia memenangkan kategori best cinematography pada ajang MTV Video Music Awards tahun 1992.

Guns N' Roses sendiri dibentuk di Los Angeles pada tahun 1985. Saat menandatangi kontrak dengan Geffen Records pada tahun 1986, grup ini terdiri dari Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, dan Steven Adler. Berikutnya terjadi beberapa kali perubahan personil hingga terakhir dengan komposisi Axl Rose, Dizzy Reed, Tommy Stinson, Chris Pitman, Richard Fortus, dan Frank Ferrer. Guns N' Roses merilis 6 studio album dan berhasil menjual lebih dari 100 juta copy di seluruh dunia.

Debut album pertama Guns N' Roses, 'Appetite for Destruction' yang rilis tahun 1987 mencapai nomor 1 di Billboard 200 hanya setahun setelah rilis. Salah satu singlenya, Sweet Child o' Mine menjadi jawara di Billboard Hot 100. Dari album ini saja mereka berhasil menjual 30 juta copy seluruh dunia. Sebanyak 18 jutanya sendiri di Amerika Serikat yang menjadikan album ini sebagai 'the best-selling debut album of all time' di AS. Mereka terus menuai sukses pada album-album berikutnya. Termasuk pada album 'Use Your Illusion I' yang melahirkan November Rain ini.
