Careless Whisper, Generasi 80-an...Siapa Tak Kenal?

Careless Whisper, salah satu lagu yang sangat populer dekade 80-an dan sukses di pasaran. Ada dua versi dari lagu ini. Versi pertama diusung Wham! Versi lainnya oleh George Michael.  

George Michael menulis lagu ini saat ia masih 17 tahun. Konon ia menulis dalam sebuah bis, saat dalam perjalanan menuju tempat kerja paruh waktunya di bioskop. Kata silver screen pada liriknya mengambil dari kerjaannya tersebut. Kebanyakan lagu Wham! memang ditulis oleh George Michael. Tapi pada lagu ini juga tercantum Andrew Ridgeley, pada credit title-nya. Careless Whisper dirilis duo ini pada album kedua mereka, Make It Big, tahun 1984. Pada saat lain George Michael merekamnya sebagai single solonya. Tak urung hal itu menjadikan rumor perpecahan mereka. Tapi George membantahnya. Dan itu ia buktikan dengan tur duo yang terus jalan, selain mereka masih melahirkan album lain pada tahun 1986.

Hal yang unik terjadi pada proses produksi, terutama pelibatan komponen saxophone dalam lagu. Mereka telah melibatkan sepuluh orang untuk mecoba memainkan melodi lagu ini. Namun akhirnya George Michael baru merasa 'klik' setelah mendengarkan permainan Steve Gregory, seorang pemain sax asal London.

Single Careless Whisper menjadi produksi pertama Epic Records yang berhasil terjual jutaan copy. Lagu ini juga menjadi hit terbesarnya George Michael, baik sebagai single solo maupun bersama Wham! Di Amerika, Careless Whisper mendapatkan sertifikat platinum yang artinya terjual lebih dari 2 juta copy. Di Inggris lagu ini memenangkan Ivor Novello Award sebagai The Most Performed Work pada tahun 1984. Pada tangga lagu, baik di Amerika maupun Inggris, lagu ini sempat lama bertengger di posisi puncak.
