Fire and Rain, Sebuah Cerita Kehilangan

Lewat suara siapa Anda mendengarkan Fire and Rain? Babyface? Dido? Bagi yang pernah melewati dekade 70-an atau tahun-tahun tak terlalu jauh setelahnya, mungkin mengenali lagu ini suara John Denver atau Willie Nelson atau tentu saja sang pemilik lagu, James Taylor. Carole King, yang sebelumnya telah bekerja sama dengan Taylor pada lagu You’ve Got A Friend, terlibat dalam permainan piano.

Yup, Fire and Rain dirilis pertama kali pada Februari 1970 lewat suara James Taylor. Ia sendiri juga yang menulis liriknya. Taylor bercerita tentang kawan masa kecilnya, Suzanne Schnerr yang mengakhiri hidupnya, dan perjuangannya membebaskan diri dari ketergantungan obat. Peristiwa kematian Schnerr terjadi saat ia berada di London, Inggris, melakukan rekaman di Apple Records untuk album pertamanya. Saat itu ia juga tengah mengalami depresi karena kegagalan dengan band yang dibentuknya. The Flying Machine. Taylor berhasil menuntaskan ini lagu saat sedang melakukan rehabilitasi untuk ketergantungannya.

Fire and Rain rilis sebagai single untuk album keduanya, Sweet Baby James, pada Februari 1970. Tak lama setelah rilis, berhasil menjadi runner up di tangga lagu Kanada, dan berada di posisi tiga Billboard Hot 100.
