We Can Work It Out, Ungkapan Optimistis Ala McCartney

We Can Work It Out. Kalimat ini menjadi salah satu quote The Beatles yang banyak dikutip. Ada nada positif dan optimis di dalamnya. Lagu ini rilis pada Desember 1965 sebagai single bersama Day Tripper. Lagu ini menjadi nomor satu baik di Amerika Serikat maupun Inggris pada Januari 1966.

We Can Work It Out berangkat dari kisah Paul McCartney dan kekasihnya, Jane Asher. Sebuah harapan dan optimisme akan hubungan mereka. Meski pada akhirnya, setelah beberapa konflik yang tak terbendung, mereka memutuskan berpisah pada tahun 1968. Lirik mendapat support dari John Lennon, seperti biasanya. Dan Lennon menyumbangkan nada pesimisnya, ‘Life is very short..’ Jadi, ketika Paul mengatakan ‘We can work it out’, Lennon menimpali dengan tak sabar ‘Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting, my friend..’ 

Pada lagu ini Paul bertugas pada vocal dan bass, Lennon pada vocal, acoustic rhythm guitar, dan harmonium, George Harrison pada tambourine, dan Ringo Starr pada drum. Membutuhkan waktu 11 jam untuk menuntaskan lagu ini. Menjadi proses perekaman dengan waktu terpanjang yang pernah The Beatles lakukan. Lagu ini diproduksi berbarengan dengan saat The Beatles membuat album Rubber Soul. Pada jelang rilis sempat memunculkan perdebatan, lagu mana yang akan berada di sisi-A, apakah Day Tripper ataukah We Can Work It Out. John bersikukuh untuk meletakkan Day Tripper di sisi pertama. Namun akhirnya We Can Work It Out yang menang. Lagu ini dapat ditemukan di album Past Master Volume 1.

Pada tahun 1970 Stevie Wonder merekam versinya untuk album Signed, Sealed and Delivered. Versinya mendapatkan posisi 13 di chart Amerika. Berpuluh tahun kemudian, persisnya pada tahun 2014, atau 50 tahun setelah kemunculan The Beatles di Ed Sullivan Show, Wonder membawakan lagu ini. Di acara yang digelar CBS bertajuk ‘The Beatles: The Night That Changed America’ tersebut, ia mengatakan mendengarkan lagu itu saat ia 15 tahun. Dan saat itu ia berujar, "It had a nice thing to it, but I said, Someday I'm going to do it again, with a little more funky thing with it."
