Come Together, Berawal Dari Lagu Pesanan Kampanye

Adalah seorang Timothy Leary, psikolog yang menjadi terkenal karena bereksperimen dengan LSD sebagai cara untuk meningkatkan interaksi sosial dan meningkatkan kesadaran. Ia melakukan banyak percobaan bukan hanya pada relawan tapi juga dirinya sendiri. Dikatakannya, obat memiliki banyak kualitas positif jika diambil dengan benar. Ketika pemerintah menindak LSD, percobaan Leary dihentikan dan dia ditangkap atas tuduhan narkoba. 

Tahun 1969, Leary memutuskan untuk mencalonkan diri sebagai Gubernur California, dan meminta John Lennon menulis lagu untuknya. Dalam wawancara dengan Majalah Playboy pada 1980, John Lennon mengatakan, ide Come Together muncul saat Leary mendatangi The Beatles dan minta dibuatkan lagu (untuk kampanyenya melawan Reagan). “I tried and I tried, but I couldn't come up with one. But I came up with this, 'Come Together,' which would've been no good to him, you couldn't have a campaign song like that, right?"

 

Come Together rilis bersama album Abbey Road pada tahun 1969. Lagu ini menempati posisi puncak pada tangga lagu Inggris, mendapatkan Grammy untuk kategori best engineered recording.

Saat George Martin menjadi produser untuk film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Aerosmith diundang untuk membuat cover version-nya. Grup yang dimotori Steven Tyler tampil dalam film sebagai the Future Villain Band. Selain Aerosmith, ada Peter Frampton dan The Bee Gees yang juga bergabung dalam film tersebut, namun sayangnya itu film yang gagal. Lagunya sendiri yang rilis sebagai single, berhasil masuk tangga lagu Amerika Serikat. Lagu ini juga dibawakan kembali oleh sejumlah nama seperti Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Meat Loaf, Guns N' Roses, Soundgarden, Marilyn Manson, Nazareth, dan Oasis.
