Respect, Lagu Favoritnya Aktivis Hak Sipil dan Feminis

Respect ditulis oleh Otis Redding dan merilisnya tahun 1965. Sebelum kematiannya dua tahun kemudian, Redding sempat membuat pengakuan, Respect adalah salah satu lagu favoritnya. Ia suka dengan kalimat: “What you want, baby, you got it; what you need, baby, you got it; all I’m asking for is a little respect when I come home.” Redding menulis lagu itu sepanjang hari dan menggarap musiknya kurang dari setengah jam.

Lagu ini cukup mendapatkan popularitas bersama penciptanya. Tapi rupanya lewat suara Aretha Franklin lebih berjaya. Dirilis bersama album I Never Loved A Man The Way I Loved You, tahun 1967, lagu ini merajai chart Amerika, dan menjadi 10 besar di Britania Raya.

Respect kemudian juga menjadi populer di kalangan aktivis hak-hak sipil dan gerakan feminis. Lima dekade terlewati, lagu ini tetap populer dan menjadit hits di mana-mana. Respect mewakili harapan setiap perempuan dan laki-laki di dalam rumah tangga, yakni rasa saling menghormati. Ini juga mewakili suara-suara mereka yang selama ini kehilangan hak-haknya sebagai manusia, seperti korban rasialisme.
