What's Up, Kegundahan Dalam Perjalanan Waktu

What's Up disebut-sebut sebagai lagu pertama grup yang terbuka menyebut diri gay dan berhasil masuk Top 40 chart. Lagu ini dirilis 4 Non Blondes tahun 1992 dalam album Bigger, Better, Faster, More. Berhasil hingga urutan kedua di tangga lagu Inggris dan nomor 14 di Amerika. 

Empat perempuan, 4 Non Blondes, memulai perjalanan musiknya dari San Francisco, California pada tahun 1989. Adalah bassis Christa Hillhouse, gitaris Shaunna Hall, drummer Wanda Day, dan vokalis sekaligus gitaris, Linda Perry. Namun jelang peluncuran album mereka, Roger Rocha menggantikan Hall, dan Dawn Richardson menggantikan Day. Perry sendiri kemudian meninggalkan grup pada tahun 1994 dan menjadi penanda bubarnya grup ini. 

Banyak yang mengapresiasi positif lirik What's Up. Namun menurut Christa Hillhouse sebetulnya tak ada yang istimewa dalam proses kreatif lagu ini. Ia bersama Perry bermain gitar dan menyanyi bersama di lorong. Itu hal yang biasa mereka lakukan. Perry pada masa itu menurut Hillhouse menulis dengan mengikuti yang diingini. Berbeda dengan Perry yang dijumpai di kemudian hari yang lebih terstruktur ketika menulis lagu. Lagu ini juga memenangkan Best Song pada Bay Area Music Awards. Sang vokalis, Linda Perry memenangkan Best Female Vocalist, dan albumnya juga memenangkan kategori Best Album.
