Mereka yang pernah hidup di era 50-an, mengenali The Great Pretender lewat suara The Platters. Sedangkan generasi tiga dekade berikutnya, tahu lagu ini disuarakan oleh vokalisnya Queen, Freddie Mercury. Versi mana yang lebih Anda suka? 

Seperti diketahui, Freddie Mercury meninggal dunia akibat AIDS pada tahun 1991, ketika dia masih berumur 45 dan masih aktif menyiapkan karya-karyanya. Dalam sebuah pernyataan di media, gitaris Queen, Brian May pernah mengatakan kalau personil lain pada awalnya tidak mengetahui sakit yang dialami Mercury. Di mata mereka Mercury terlihat biasa. May menilai Mercury pintar menyembunyikan rasa sakit yang dideritanya. Mungkin itu pula yang menjadikan The Great Pretender terdengar lebih pas lewat Mercury.

The Greatest Love of All, Lagu Untuk Anak-anak Masa Depan

The Greatest Love of All ditulis oleh Michael Masser dan Linda Creed. Saat itu Creed sedang dalam masa pemulihan pasca pengobatan kanker payudara. Creed sendiri dikenal sebagai pencetak banyak hits dari sejumlah grup, seperti The Spinners, The Stylistics, dan penyanyi di bawah label Philadelphia International. Masser dan Creed menulis lagu ini untuk film biografi Mohammad Ali, The Greatest tahun 1977, dan direkam lewat suara George Benson.

 

Saat dibawakan Benson, lagu ini hanya mampu berada di nomor 24 pada tangga lagu Amerika. Keberuntungan tampaknya milik Whitney Houston. Rilis tahun 1985 dalam album bertajuk namanya, lagu ini berhasil menempati posisi puncak selama 3 minggu berturut-turut.

Saat itu, saat Houston berhasil mencapai puncak dari lagu karyanya lebih mendunia, Creed akhirnya menyerah pada penyakitnya, 10 April 1986, di usianya yang ke 37 tahun.
