I Want To Know What Love Is ditulis gitaris Foreigner, Mick Jones. Biasanya lagu-lagu Foreinger ditulis berdua, Jones dan sang lead singer Lou Gramm. Tapi pada lagu ini, Jones menulis sendiri.

Konon Jones mengaku inspirasi lagu ini tak datang dari pengalaman personal. Universal feeling. Ia berpikir tentang hubungan yang tak baik dan bahkan nyaris kandas, namun masih ada upaya untuk melakukan perbaikan. Tapi ada yang menyebut lagu ini berangkat dari hubungan Jones dengan kekasih yang kemudian menjadi istrinya, Ann Dexter-Jones. Terlepas dari mana kabar yang benar, persoalan cinta dan hubungan antar manusia yang digubah dalam lirik ditambah melodi ini telah berubah menjadi lagu cinta yang menarik. Tambahan gospel choir juga telah sukses menjadikan lagu ini terkesan agung.

I Want To Know What Love Is dirilis tahun 1984 dalam album Agent Provocateur dan langsung merajai chart baik di Amerika maupun Inggris. Bertahun kemudian Mariah Carey dan Tina Arena membuat cover version yang cukup disukai penikmat musik.
