Open Arms, Power Ballad Asik Milik Journey

Journey, grup yang dibentuk pada tahun 1973 di San Fransisco. Grup ini melewati sekian fase. Namun mereka dianggap paling sukses, baik secara performa maupun komersial adalah pada periode 1978 hingga 1987. Pada kurun waktu tersebut meluncurkan sejumlah lagu yang menjadi hit di antaranya Don't Stop Believin'. Lagu yang dirilis tahun 1981 tersebut baru-baru lalu menjadi top-selling catalog track pada iTunes history. Hit yang lain yang sempat mencapai posisi pertama Billboard adalah Open Arms. 

Open Arms ditulis Steve Perry dan Jonathan Cain. Lagu yang bernuansa balad ini bercerita tentang pasangan yang terpisah tapi kemudian masing-masing saling menemukan dan menyadari 'how much they love each other'. Jonathan Cain sendiri sebetulnya sudah mulai menulis lagu ini saat masih bergabung di The Babys. Namun John Waite yang saat itu menjadi vokalis grup tersebut tak suka dan menyebut melodi lagu itu sebagai 'sentimental rubbish.'
 
Apa yang disebut John Waite rupanya berbeda dengan apa yang disukai oleh penikmat musik. Setelah direkam oleh Journey, Open Arms menjadi salah satu lagu yang disebut-sebut sebagai 'the greatest love songs ever written'. VH1 menyebutnya 'the greatest power ballad of all time'. Sedangkan Mike DeGagne dari AllMusic mengatakan sebagai 'One of rock's most beautiful ballads'. Cukup banyak artis yang merekam ulang lagu ini, seperti Barry Manilow, Boyz II Men, Celine Dion, dan Mariah Carey.

Because You Loved Me, Lagu Persembahan Untuk Ayah

Because You Loved Me ditulis oleh salah satu penulis lirik pencetak hits, Diane Warren, diproduksi oleh David Foster dan dibawakan Celine Dion. Siapa yang sanggup menolak lagu manis ini?

Lagu ini menjadi salah satu hit Celine Dion. Sukses secara komersil dan menjadi nomor satu di 'Billboard Hot 100' selama 6 pekan berturut-turut. Lagu ini menjadi salah satu soundtrack film Up Close & Personal yang dibintangi oleh Robert Redford dan Michelle Pfeiffer. Dirilis dalam bentuk single tahun 1996 berbarengan dengan penayangan film tersebut. Tiga tahun kemudian rilis bersama album All the Way dan tahun 2008 dalam album My Love: Essential Collection in 2008.

Lagu yang didedikasikan Warren untuk ayahnya ini juga sukses dibawakan dan diproduksi dalam bahasa Spanyol oleh beberapa penyanyi di negeri matador tersebut.

1 Januari, The Beatles dan Decca Records

Audisi The Beatles di Decca Records adalah peristiwa yang banyak disebut-sebut. Sungguh disayangkan perusahaan rekaman ini tak meloloskan the fab four. Bayangkan berapa banyak keuntungan dan popularitas yang mereka bisa dapatkan seandainya menyetujui untu merekam lagu-lagu The Beatles. Ah, tapi ya barangkali perjalanan The Beatles memang musti begitu ya..😀 Bisa jadi The Beatles tak seperti yang kita kenal searang seandainya mereka diterima Decca. Dan peristiwa ini terjadi pada tahun baru, 1 Januari 1962, di London. 

Adalah perwakilan label A & R Mike Smith yang menyaksikan penampilan The Beatles di Cavern Club pada 13 Desember 1961. Performa The Beatles malam itu dianggap tak cukup kuat untuk bisa masuk dapur rekaman. Tapi label memberikan penawaran untuk sebuah sesi di studio mereka di 165 Broadhurst Gardens, West Hampstead, London. The Beatles pun, yang saat itu dengan personel John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, dan Pete Best melakukan perjalanan dari Liverpool bersama sopir yang sekaligus roadie, Neil Aspinall. Mereka melewati badai salju sepanjang perjalanan, hingga akhirnya tiba tepat waktu audisi yang dijanjikan, pukul 11.00. Brian Epstein melakukan perjalanan sendiri dengan kereta api. Sayangnya malah Smith yang datang terlambat dan bikin kesel para anak muda ini.

Ada tiga lagu yang merupakan karya John dan Paul yakni Like Dreamers Do, Hello Little Girl, dan Love Of The Loved. Semua lagu itu di kemudian hari dipasarkan dalam album Decca audition. Ada lima lagu yang dapat ditemukan di album Anthology 1 yaitu Searchin', Three Cool Cats, The Sheik Of Araby, Like Dreamers Do, dan Hello Little Girl.  

Apa yang membuat Decca menolak The Beatles? Kepala A&R, Dick Rowe mengatakan, "Guitar groups are on the way out, Mr Epstein." Lalu kalimat itu pun menjadi terkenal. Dick Rowe lantas dikenal sebagai "the man who turned down The Beatles." Tapi toh penolakan itu tak membuat Brian Epstein mundur. Pada kesempatan lain ia melakukan perjalanan kembali ke London dan mengadakan pertemuan dengan Decca. Ia menjanjikan bakal menjual lebih dari 3.000 copy tiap rekaman The Beatles. Seandainya..ya, seandainya Dick Rowe mau terima, mungkin sejarahnya akan berbeda. 

Manager toko rekaman HMV di London's Oxford Street menyarankan Epstein untuk mengubah format rekaman audisi ke dalam bentuk yang lebih mudah dimainkan. Epstein setuju dan segera memproses rekaman. Tujuan Epstein satu: Beatles menandatangani kontrak rekaman. Pada pertemuan berikutnya antar Epstein, George Martin, dan kepala A&R di Parlophone, saat mendengarkan rekaman Beatles untuk Decca, Martin malah tertarik untuk menawari The Beatles melakukan audisi di Abbey Road.
