Iris, Goo Goo Dolls, dan City of Angel

Bagi penyuka film, kalau menikmati lagu ini bisa jadi akan langsung mengingatkan pada City of Angel, film yang memang menampilkan lagu dari grup rock alternatif asal Amerika tersebut. Iris dari Goo Goo Dolls. Lagu ini dirilis bersama album keenam mereka, Dizzy Up the Girl.

Selain menjadi hit terbesarnya Goo Goo Dolls di Amerika, Iris juga berhasil memasuki wilayah lintas format musik. Dari modern rock radio ke pop and adult contemporary radio. Pada tahun lagu ini rilis, 1998, Iris berhasil menjadi nomor satu dari tangga lagu dari aneka format musik.

Barangkali popularitas Iris tak bisa dilepaskan dari si film sendiri. City of Angels, film yang dibintangi oleh Meg Ryan dan Nicolas Cage ini sukses secara komersil. Bercerita tentang malaikat yang jatuh cinta pada manusia. Kisah cinta absurd tapi manis, meski tak berakhir bahagia. 

Iris rilis sebagai single kedua dari film City of Angels. Single yang rilis pertama, Uninvited dari Alanis Morissette. Sedangkan single ketiga adalah Angel yang disuarakan Sarah McLachlan. Beberapa lagu lain lain di film ini juga menjadi hits.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps, karya Terbaik George Harrison bersama The Beatles

While My Guitar Gently Weeps adalah salah satu lagu yang sangat saya suka, bersama banyak lagu The Beatles lainnya tentu saja. Selain karena harmoni yang menarik sekaligus membangkitkan nuansa keueung nan melankolik (apa pula ini? :) ) juga karena selalu merasa ajaib dengan pertemanan George Harrison sang pencipta lagu dan Eric Clapton yang ikut dilibatkan di lagu ini.

Konon George terinspirasi oleh I Ching, sosok Buddha Tionghoa yang tengah ia baca bukunya. George mendapatkan gagasan tentang relativisme. Ia menangkap, pada konsep Timur segala sesuatu itu relatif terhadap sesuatu yang lain; terasa berlawanan dengan pandangan Barat yang menyatakan peristiwa terjadi secara tidak disengaja. Pada saat kunjungannya ke rumah orang tuanya di Warrington, George mulai menulis tentang lagu ini. Ia menulis lirik dengan mengambil kalimat pertama yang ia baca setelah membuka sebuah buku secara acak. Dan kalimat itu adalah gently weeps. 

Sekadar catatan, I Ching atau I Tsing adalah bhiksu Buddha yang berkelana untuk mendapatkan teks agama Buddha dalam bahasa Sansekerta. Ia melakukan perjalanan lewat laut ke India melalui Jalur Sutra. Selama perjalanannya tersebut I Ching pernah singgah ke Kerajaan Sriwijaya (tahun 671). Tulisannya juga dijadikan salah satu sumber sejarah kerajaan maritim Nusantara tersebut. 

Dalam prosesnya kemudian ada beberapa perubahan lirik. Perbedaan versi ini dapat dibandingkan dalam album studio The Beatles atau White Album dengan yang direkam di album Antology 3. Begitu pun dalam proses perekamannya. The Beatles merekam lagu ini beberapa kali, termasuk versi gitar solo backward seperti yang dilakukan Harrison di lagu I'm Only Sleeping di Revolver. Tapi ia tak puas. Lalu pada 6 September 1968, dalam perjalanan dari Surrey ke London, Harrison meminta Eric Claptop untuk terlibat dalam lagu ini. Clapton konon sempat ragu, namun George berhasil meyakinkan. Jadilah mereka merekam malam itu juga dalam versi gitar utama Claptop yang menggunakan Gibson Les Paul. 

Beberapa penyanyi dan grup musik membawakan kembali lagu ini. Bersama Clapton, pada 29 November 2002, Paul McCartney menyanyikan lagu ini pada konser untuk mengenang setahun meninggalnya George Harrison. Tahun 2004, nama George Harrison diabadikan dalam Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sebagai artis solo. Pada hari itu While My Guitar Gently Weeps dimainkan oleh Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Steve Ferrone, Marc Mann, Dhani Harrison, dan Prince.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps berada di urutan 136 dalam daftar The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time-nya Majalah Rolling Stone. Majalah tersebut juga menempatkan ini lagu di urutan ke-7 dalam daftar 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time, dan posisi 10 dalam daftar The Beatles 100 Greatest Song. Sementara itu pooling yang diadakan Majalah Guitar World pada Februari 2012 menempatkan lagu ini sebagai lagu terbaik Harrison saat bersama The Beatles.

There You'll Be, Soundtrack Ciamik Dari Pearl Harbor

Lagu ini ditulis Diane Warren untuk soundtrack film Pearl Harbor yang rilis tahun 2001. Awalnya There You'll Be disiapkan untuk Celine Dion yang konon menolaknya. Pilihan berikutnya jatuh ke penyanyi country Amerika, Faith Hill.

There You'll Be menjadi yang pertama dan satu-satunya lagu Faith Hill yang berhasil menembus 'UK Top 10 hit'. Sementara untuk Amerika, lagu ini cukup banyak masuk dalam chart, Billboard Hot 100, Billboard Country Singles Chart, dan Adult Contemporary chart. Bahkan berhasil ada di posisi puncak tangga lagu Kanada. Lagunya sendiri tak dirilis dalam bentuk single, karena produser bersikukuh untuk merilisnya dalam bentuk album bersama soundtrack Pearl Harbor lainnya.

Lewat lagu ini Faith Hill dinominasikan untuk Grammy Award tahun 2002 kategori Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Namun ia kalah dari Nelly Furtado dengan lagunya I'm Like a Bird. Dinominasikan pula untuk Academy Award kategori Best Original Song, tapi lagi-lagi ia kalah saing. Penghargaan dimenangkan Randy Newman untuk lagunya If I Didn't Have You dari film Monsters, Inc.
