Unchained Melody, Lagu Cinta Lintas Masa

Unchained Melody barangkali memang terlahir untuk menjadi populer. Bahkan lagu ini disebut-sebut sebagai lagu yang paling banyak direkam pada abad 20; konon dalam sekitar 500 versi termasuk dalam bahasa yang berbeda di seluruh dunia.

Unchained Melody pertama dirilis tahun 1955 bersama kemunculannya di film Unchained, yang dibintangi Elroy 'Crazy Legs' Hirsch. Pada kemunculan pertama, karya Alex North dan Hy Zaret ini disuarakan Todd Duncan. Tak lama setelah kemunculan filmnya, muncul versi lain dari Les Baxter dan Al Hibbler. Dua-duanya masuk dalam 3 besar tangga lagu Amerika Serikat. Namun versi yang dianggap paling populer adalah dari Righteous Brothers.

The Righteous Brothers merekam Unchained Melody tahun 1965 dalam album Just Once In My Life. Lagu ini langsung dapat peringkat bagus di tangga lagu, baik Amerika Serikat maupun Britania Raya. Duo ini kembali menemui keberuntungannya tahun 1990, saat lagu ini dimunculkan di film Ghost, yang dibintangi oleh Patrick Swayze dan Demi Moore. Film sukses ini kembali menaikkan pamor Unchained Melody, baik di chart maupun dalam penjualan. Bukan hanya lagu yang rilis tahun 1990, tapi juga versi original yang mereka rekam pada tahun 1965.
