Lagu ini menjadi tema dari film dengan judul sama, Footloose, yang dibintangi Kevin Bacon bersama Rob Lowe dan Tom Cruise. Sedangkan lagunya disuarakan Kenny Loggins.
Film ini berkisah tentang remaja yang baru pindah ke kota kecil dimana para penghuninya dilarang menari. Konon Dean Pitchford mendapatkan ide dari koran tahun 1979 yang menceritakan tentang Elmore City di Oklahoma yang membuat larangan menari bahkan hukuman buat penari. Aturan yang diberlakukan sejak tahun 1800-an. Dean Pitchford adalah penulis naskah sekaligus penulis lirik untuk semua lagu di film tersebut.
Sementara Kenny Loggins adalah bintang yang punya andil besar yang membantu Caddyshack mendapatkan sukses dengan lagunya, I'm Alright pada tahun 1980. Dua tahun berikutnya mencetak sukses juga lewat lagu Don't Fight It yang ia tulis bersama Pitchford dan Steve Perry, yang ikut mengisi suara juga pada lagu tersebut. Saat project film Footloose berproses, Pitchford mengajak Loggins untuk bergabung. Saat ini Loggins tengah melakukan pemulihan untuk cedera yang dialaminya. Butuh proses lama, tapi.. yup, ia bergabung dalam project tersebut dan jadilah lagu itu menjadi hit lewat suaranya.
