Rainy Days and Mondays ditulis oleh Paul Williams bersama Roger Nichols. Pada masa itu Williams bisa dikatakan sebagai aktor gagal. Ia sempat mengikuti casting untuk film The Chase. Namun akhirnya tak muncul dalam film yang dibintangi Marlon Brando, Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, dan Robert Duvall tersebut. Ia pun banting stir dengan menulis lagu. Tak banyak lagu yang dihasilkan, tapi setidaknya dia menciptakan dua hits untuk The Carpenters yakni Rainy Days and Mondays dan We've Only Just Begun.
Rainy Days and Mondays rilis tahun 1971. Awalnya lagu ini diperuntukkan bagi The 5th Dimension, namun grup tersebut menolak. Lewat lagu ini The Carpenters nongkrong di posisi 2 Billboard Hot 100. Lagu ini juga mendapatkan sertifikat Gold dari asosiasi industri rekaman Amerika Serikat, RIAA.
Beberapa penyanyi menyanyikan kembali lagu ini. Bahkan AC/DC dengan gaya mereka. Tentunya kita nikmati saja versi aslinya.
