"What If God Is One Of Us?" Itulah pertanyaan pada refrain lagu yang berhasil memberi Joan Osborne sejumlah penghargaan, One of Us. Lagu ini rilis tahun 1996 bersama album Relish.
Lewat One of Us, penyanyi Amerika ini pada tahun 1996 memborong 3 Grammy Award yakni Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Record of The Year, dan Song of The Year. VH1 juga memasukkan lagu ini dalam daftar 100 lagu terbaik era 90-an. Lirik lagu yang sempat menuai kontroversi ini ditulis oleh Eric Bazilian. Sang penulis sendiri mengatakan, "For me, the song was more about what happens to you when you look at something that has completely changed your world view, which could be meeting God, it could be meeting an alien, it could be a near-death experience, it could be anything like that. Just how everything you know is wrong, or everything you know is right, and you didn't know it."
Lagu ini ditulis Brazilian dua tahun sebelum rilis. Ia ingat, pada sebuah hari saat istrinya baru pindah dari Swedia, mereka menonton televisi yang tengah menayangkan 'The Making of Sgt. Pepper', tayangan dokumenter tentang The Beatles dan George Martin. Istrinya rupanya sangat terkesan dengan tayangan itu dan meminta sang suami untuk merekam sesuatu. Meski awalnya Brazilian merasa enggan, akhirnya jadi juga lagu tersebut.
Meski menurut Brazilian lagu ini tak terkait dengan relijiusitas, namuan One of Us terpilih sebagai theme song program CBS TV bertajuk 'Joan Of Arcadia'. Program ini tayang pada kurun waktu 2003-2005, tentang seorang gadis muda yang menjumpai Tuhan dalam bentuk manusia biasa.
