Why menjadi lagu pertama Annie Lennox setelah ia memutuskan bersolo karir. Diliris tahun 1992 dalam album bertajuk 'Diva'. 

Dalam sebuah wawancara, Lennox mengatakan Why ini sesuatu yang sangat pribadi, terkait dengan keputusannya untuk solo. Dia sendiri tak yakin bisa menulis lagunya sendiri, tapi kenyataannya ia menulis Why konon hanya dalam 10 menit saja. Ada yang berspekulasi bahwa lagu ini menggambarkan relasi cinta Lennox bersama personil Eurythmics, Dave Stewart, yang selama ini dibantahnya. Tapi Lennox kembali menepis anggapan itu dalam catatan yang dibuatnya saat ia mempromokan album greatest hits-nya pada 2009. Lennox menulis: "I think this song expresses something of a sense of 'I need to take a stand, and say this.' It's almost testifying, like 'My Way,' or something. The world can be so baffling at times, so you find yourself constantly trying to figure it out... It's also about looking at the aftermath of things. After all this darkness and disappointment with the personal battles you've gone through... Contemplating the ashes of experience, and questioning what it was ever all about. Annie Lennox sendiri sebelum sukses bersama Eurytmics pada tahun 80-an, tergabung dalam band 70-an pengusung new wave, The Tourists. Selain sebagai satu dari sedikit penyanyi asal Scotlandia, ia juga dikenal sebagai aktivis politik dan philanthropist. Lennox juga adalah artis perempuan paling dikenal di Brit Awards, karena memenangkan total delapan penghargaan. Termasuk di antaranya enam kali Best British Female Artist. Annie Lennox juga dinobatkan sebagai Brits Champion of Champions.
