I Will Survive, Hit Gloria Gaynor Yang Melegenda

I Will Survive. Dinyanyikan Gloria Gayner pada tahun 1979. Lagu ini berkisah tentang sebuah tekad dari seorang perempuan yang baru saja mengalami pengalaman buruk dalam sebuah relationship. Sebuah lagu untuk memberi harapan tentang beranjak dari hubungan yang bermasalah.    

Lagu ini ditulis produser pendiri Motown, Freddie Perren dan Dino Fekaris. Perren juga dikenal terlibat dalam pembuatan tiga hits Jackson 5: I Want You Back, The Love You Save, dan ABC. Lagu ini sendiri mereka tulis setelah mereka meninggalkan Motown. Saat menjadi 'penganggur' inilah mereka menulis lirik lagu. Sebelumnya mereka sempat memproduseri duo Peaches & Herb yang berhasil menelorkan hits Reunited. Namun selebihnya tak ada karya yang menurut mereka tak cukup berarti. Hingga suatu kali Fekaris menyalakan televisi dan menemukan lagu yang ditulisnya sedang tayang sebagai theme song sebuah film. Momentum yang menginspirasi, yang membuatnya berujar: "I'm going to make it. I'm going to be a songwriter. I will survive!"

Setelah lagu selesai dibuat, mereka belum menemukan penyanyinya. Tapi mereka bersepakat adalah seorang diva yang bakal membawakan lagu itu. Lalu mereka menemukan Gloria Gaynor yang dirasa tepat. Saat itu Gaynor tengah merekam ulang lagunya Righteous Brothers, Substitute. Jadilah I Will Survive ditempatkan di sisi B.

Meski ditempatkan di sisi kedua, I Will Survive mampu mengungguli Substitute. Pada Maret 1979, saat Substitute masih ada di nomor besar, I Will Survive menjadi jawara di tangga lagu Amerika Serikat. Pada tahun ini pula, I Will Survive memnangkan Grammy Award untuk kategori Best Disco Recording, kategori yang pertama dan terakhir dibuat. Kategori yang hanya milik I Will Survive 😊

I Will Survive dinyanyikan dalam berbagai versi dan bahasa. Setidaknya ada 20 bahasa, termasuk bahasa Arab. Gloria Gaynor sendiri sudah melahirkan sejumlah hits, Never Can Say Goodbye yang berhasil bertahan di posisi 9 tangga lagu. Juga beberapa cover version yang cukup populer seperti Walk On By, Reach Out, dan I'll Be There. Namun I Will Survive seolah identik dengan Gloria Gaynor.
