Hello, Is It Me You're Looking For?

Dirilis tahun 1983, Hello jadi bagian dari album kedua Lionel Richie pasca hengkang dari The Commodores. Album bertajuk Can’t Slow Down ini menjadi catatan sejarah tersendiri bagi Motown Records. Selain berhasil mendapatkan Grammy tahun 1984 untuk kategori Album of the Year, juga berhasil mendulang penjualan album paling besar bagi Motown.

Hello sebetulnya ditulis Richie untuk album pertamanya, tapi tak jadi. Lagu ini berangkat dari ingatan Richie pada masa mudanya. Saat beberapa perempuan cantik melintas di depannya dan dia terlalu malu untuk menyapa. Dia hanya bisa membatin,  "Hello, is it me you’re looking for?"

 

Nyatanya ia butuh waktu cukup lama untuk menggarap lagu ini. Stuck. Hingga sang produser turun tangan, memaksanya untuk menuntaskan lagunya. Lagu yang ternyata memang menjadi hits.

Hello menjadi nomor satu di Amerika dan Inggris. Untuk di UK, lagu ini bahkan menjadi yang pertama bagi Motown bisa berhasil menjual jutaan copy.
